What is the New SAT? | Format, Sections, and What’s Changed in 2024
If you’re planning to study in the United States, the SAT is still a crucial part of the college admissions process. But starting in 2024, the SAT has gone completely digital, bringing major changes in its format, duration, and delivery.
So, what exactly is the New SAT, and how is it different from the previous version?
What is the New SAT?
The New Digital SAT is a computer-based standardized test administered by the College Board. It assesses a student’s college readiness in Reading, Writing, and Math. While its core purpose remains the same, the updated SAT offers a shorter and more efficient testing experience.
Key Changes in the New SAT
- The test is now fully digital
- Duration reduced to 2 hours and 14 minutes
- Shorter reading passages, each followed by a single question
- Adaptive testing: Question difficulty adjusts based on your performance in each module
- Faster score delivery, typically within days
- Calculator allowed throughout the entire Math section
New SAT Test Structure
Section | Time | Number of Questions | Content Overview |
---|---|---|---|
Reading & Writing (Module 1) | 32 minutes | ~27 questions | Short passages (25–150 words), grammar, vocabulary, reasoning |
Reading & Writing (Module 2) | 32 minutes | ~27 questions | Adaptive based on Module 1 performance |
Math (Module 1) | 35 minutes | ~22 questions | Algebra, advanced math, problem-solving, geometry |
Math (Module 2) | 35 minutes | ~22 questions | Adaptive based on Module 1 performance |
Total | 2 hours 14 minutes | ~98 questions | Entire test is taken on a digital device (tablet or laptop) |
Scoring
The SAT is scored out of 1600, divided as follows:
- 800 points for Reading & Writing
- 800 points for Math
There is no penalty for wrong answers, so students are encouraged to attempt every question.
Who Should Take the SAT?
The SAT is typically taken by students in Grade 11 or 12 who are planning to apply to undergraduate programs in the U.S. and some other countries like Canada, Singapore, and the UK. It’s best to take the SAT at least 6–12 months before your college application deadlines.
